But yesterday and today, attempting to resume on a project, LW opens, shows all the right windows, but the moment I click on the project, LW crashes and auto-closes. I am on 64-bit Vista Home Premium over an Acer 8920 with a T9500 chip and 4 gig, served by 1.3 terabite HD.

Okay, so apparently you now right-click on the clip and select "Speed.." from the context menu. The location of the mouse pointer when you right-click doesn't seem to matter.
